LITERACY OUTREACH PROGRAM

The cycle of poverty in Guatemala can only be broken one way- with education. Many families cannot afford to send their children to school and the need for work at an early age ends education for many of those who do attend.

In an effort to offer a better future to these children, a literacy program has been started at the Brazos Abiertos base in San José Pinula. In 2008 the program was attended by only 3 village children.  In 2009 we plan to expand the program to include more children and a longer learning day. 

Nichole, our newest intern, is taking an active role in the literacy classes. Her experience as a k-4 teacher is invaluable and has made a huge difference for our students.  Her ideas to make next year's program evolve into a small school setting are phenomenal and we are very excited.
